Hey Ladies,
In June 2007, I completed my Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from the University of Calgary. I am also a certified personal trainer through Canfit Pro. I have my CPR Level C and First Aid. I am also a fully certified Highland Dance Instructor through SDTA (Scottish Dance Teacher's Alliance) and Scotdance Alberta.
Growing up, I was always the athletic girl who played all of the sports in school, and danced as an extracurricular activity. I always enjoyed playing sports and didn't realize it was even "exercise". When I got to University, my activity levels went on a slippery slope downhill. With the workload, and trying to keep an income flow, my sports participation diminished. I noticed a lull in my energy levels and let life interfere. It wasn't until meeting a classmate that I began to realize what I was missing.
Before this point, I never was one to "go to the gym". When I walked into the gym for the first time, I was overwhelmed. I didn't know what to do, what machine to use, or even how to use them. Before long, I noticed a surge in energy, improved attitude towards my life and the beginnings of some great friendships as a result. I became hooked and started scheduling regular workouts in between classes.
My new found love for the gym, and fitness outside of sport made me excited to spread the word to my other friends and family. I knew that I needed to move in the pursuit of health, wellness and fitness.
Although I have never completed a marathon, or gotten the "wow that's incredible" response from others as a result of my fitness accomplishments, it's the small steps along the way that have contributed to my success. It's so important for me to always set little goals for my own fitness. For example, when I started Bootycamp as a recruit myself, I could do 32 push ups in 60 seconds, and of those 32, 13 were on my toes. By the end of the first 8 week session, I could do 51 total with 28 off my knees.
I believe that setting small goals keeps you focused, and goal-oriented. It keeps one determined to achieve them and when you finally do, it's a feeling that nobody can instill in you.
My passion for women's fitness is seeing women achieve little accomplishments along the way. It's neat seeing how excited we as women get, when those "chicken wings" begin to disappear, or when we can tighten our belt up that extra notch in the mornings. The little things are sometimes all we need to stay motivated and positive. Men think women are complicated, but what's complicated about this? Small changes make us happy. We don't the world moved for us to stay content! It's nice to see women start to believe in themselves, and know that they deserve to feel great and are completely capable of achieving that.
Fitness should be fun. I know so many women who hate exercising because "it's hard work". I think that there are so many ways to be fit and healthy and keep it fun. We need to erase that stigma. We all want to look great, feel great and so many of us are fearful to "sweat" or lift weights for fear of bulking up" that we avoid it. I try to disguise it as much as possible and if you happen to "sweat" along the way, even better!
I have been doing personal training for a couple of years and love that. When I signed up to be a recruit for Booty Camp, the first day of class, I was inspired. I saw the impact my Instructor had on a large group of women. I know the reward I feel when I have one client reach her goals, and so I was drawn to the idea that I could amplify that feeling if I could work with a group of ladies and see a whole bunch of them achieve their goals together. Besides, who doesn't love sweating with other women, while squatting, lunging, and crunching to great music?!?
Year round, I dance which is personally taking classes as well as instructing. In the winter, I love downhill skiing and cross country skiing. In the summers, I golf and hit the bike paths on my rollerblades.
I just enjoy spending time with my friends and family. It doesn't really matter what we do, but more about just being with them. I currently work as a Consultant Relationship Coordinator for an IT Company, however I have ambitions on returning to school to complete a nursing degree. My guilty pleasure has to be reality tv... the more drama the better!
